During the Autumn Term, Year 4 go on a school trip to Bore Place where they learn much about brick making, brick bonding and wattle and daubing.

All the children have a go at making their own small bricks by hand.

 cut the clay
We cut some clay from a clump using a crook hold.

 rolled clay
Rolled it around in sand to prevent it sticking to the mould.

 Mould
Placed it in a mould and smoothed it down.

remove
Removed the clay
from the mould

brick
Here is a brick we made.

We are looking forward to taking them home in a months time.

The bricks will be left to
dry in a kiln.

The children learned much from their day out and the work they did reinforced work introduced in the classroom.

This is Rachaels report of the trip to Bore Place

I thought Bore Place was very interesting. I liked making the bricks best because I thought I did well. I liked building the wall as well. I did not do very well making the wall because the bricks were not straight but it did not fall down. I did mine with Nathalie and it did not fall down.

We looked at lots of different walls and we wrote down what bond they were. Most of them were Flemish Bonding and a few were Old English but not a lot.

We did some sketching in a big field. there were cows in the field and they followed me. i sketched the landscape and a cow.

Making the brick was most fun. This is how you make a brick. First of all you need a mould. Then you wet the inside of the mould. After that you put it in sand to stop the clay sticking to the mould. You then use a crook hold to get some clay. You roll the clay in some sand and then count 1, 2, 3, and throw it into the mould. With the palm of your hand you squash the clay down into the mould. To get the clay out of the mould, you shake the mould and the clay brick lands on the bench.
