British life and culture - England, Scotland and Wales
The British Isles
Woodlands Junior School is in the south-east corner of England

The British Isles rise from a continental shelf, an under water ledge of land extending into the Alantic Ocean from northwestern Europe

What is the British Isles?

The British Isles is a geographically term which includes two large islands, Great Britain and Ireland, and 5,000 small islands, most notably the Isle of Man which has its own parliament and laws.

"A group of islands in W Europe, consisting of Great Britain, Ireland, the Isle of Man, Orkney, the Shetland Islands, the Channel Islands belonging to Great Britain, and the islands adjacent to these"

NB. The association of the term British with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, as well as its association with the island of Great Britain cause the term to be regarded as objectionable or inappropriate to many people in Ireland when it is used to include Ireland.

What is the largest British Isles island?

The largest island in the British Isles is Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland).
