Tonbridge Then and Now

The town of Tonbridge lies on the River Medway in the County of Kent, about 30 miles south east of London.

The following pages will tell you how Tonbridge came to be the town it is today. These pages have been written for our students to help them with their local history study. (Activity Sheet)

Thousands of years ago, Tonbridge was in the middle of a huge forest. There was no high street, no shops, no houses and no castle. In fact, Tonbridge did not exist at all!

How did Tonbridge begin?
To answer this question we need to consider the following questions:

When was this area first settled?

Why did a settlement grow here?

How has Tonbridge grown?

What is the town like now?

Over the next few pages, we would like to take you back in time to show you how and why Tonbridge has become the thriving town it is today.
